Top Ten Tuesday: Books On My Summer 2019 TBR

Summer has always been a time for intense reading for me. When I was in school, I’d go hard for the summer reading programs at both of my local libraries in the summer. That’s right! One just wasn’t enough! We had a ‘rule’ at our house that you could only count books checked out from a particular library for that library’s program so no worries – I wasn’t counting my reads for double! Needless to say, summers always came with stacks of books everywhere in my house.

Now that I’m out of school I have a lot less time for reading so I don’t go through nearly as many books but I still get really excited about summer reading!

I have a TBR that stretches on for what feels like miles. I thought I’d help figure out this list by just doing books I own and still need to read. Even that was too many so this list is comprised of the top ten books I own physical copies of that I’d like to read before the summer’s over. To all the book babies I skipped for this list – I’m sorry. I love you. I’ll read you one day. (I hope)

Blanca & Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore I’ve actually started this before but ended up putting it down for library holds that came in and then never got back to it. As always, McLemore writes gorgeously. I can’t wait to get back to this.
Descendant of the Crane by Joan He THIS WAS A PRE-ORDER. I waited so long for it. The hype was real. And yet I somehow never got around to reading it. I think part of that might be fear that it doesn’t live up to the hype?
The Devouring Gray by Christine Lynn Herman This looked so good I picked it up at the store and then never read it? I’ve heard good things and it has a skull on the cover. Plus we all know summer is just the hot season one has to get through before it’s Halloween. Spooky summer reads, please!
We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal From the blurb alone we have a huntress and a prince of death. I feel some hate to love happening. And I’ve been promised a lush fantasy world. The book itself is also gorgeous. I usually have it out around the house so I can look at it!
There’s Something About Sweetie by Sandhya Menon So I’ve read When Dimple Met Rishi and From Twinkle, With Love and loved both (though I admittedly loved Twinkle a little more) and I met Sweetie in As Kismet Would Have It. I literally cannot wait to get back into a Menon rom-com. This was a pre-order that came out while I was super sick and as such, it’s been sitting there unread far too long.
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon The hype for this is real? F/F, high fantasy, dragons. It’s also so big??? I gave up on taking it to work to read on break because it was just so heavy to lug around.
The Candle and the Flame by Nafiza Azad Nafiza Azad weaves an immersive tale of magic and the importance of names; fiercely independent women; and, perhaps most importantly, the work for harmony within a city of a thousand cultures and cadences. Literally every bit of this part of the blurb drew me to this book and it’s been on my TBR ever since. I was fortunate enough to win a copy of this book in a giveaway but it was another fatality of the great sickening.
Finale by Stephanie Garber So Caraval was absolutely wonderful. Gorgeous. Amazing. I loved it. I wasn’t as taken with the sequel, Legendary, as it didn’t seem to have the same rule set applied to it as the first book and it felt really disjointed as a sequel. It also just felt less magical. I’m really hoping that Finale takes me back to Caraval.
Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi I started this a looooooooooooooooong time ago and I had to return it to the library way too soon where it had a mile long waitlist. I found a copy in a secondhand store a while back and just need to set aside time to get back to it. I do remember liking what I had read, so that’s promising!
The Library of Fates by Aditi Khorana Back when I was struggling to get over The Wrath and the Dawn, this book was recommended to me as being similar. I bought it to try and get past my book hangover. Shipping took so long I managed to move on without this book but I still want to read it. And, because it’s me, we all know that how gorgeous this cover is is a huge deciding factor.

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by Jana at so be sure to go check her out!
